Kamalkari is a hand print in a cotton cloth. It is said to be derived from Persian word qualam- ‘pen’ and kari ‘craftmanship’. In India mostly two varieties of Kalamkari painting is seen, Shree Kalahasthi and Machilipatnam. The first variety is completely done with hand and was flourished around temples with religious identity. It is mostly used in depicting Hindu mythological stories, deities, chariot banner and temple hangings. Where are Machilipatnam variety is evolved from the patronage of Muslim rulers of Andhra Pradesh and mostly seen in Krishna District. Mr. Shiva Prasad Reddy is a renowned Kalamakari painter and has numerous awards credited to his works. Few of his works are also listed in Guinness World Records. He uses natural colours in his works. His largest painting depicting Ramayana and Mahabharatha story is 47*11 feet (width), this he completed in two years everyday spending 5 hours for his masterpiece.
